General Information
===================

Welcome to Casa Caracol, the Snail House!

Here is some general information that you may find useful:

- Alarm is activated, you will have been sent alarm instructions via email
- Always lock the front gates to avoid anyone coming in
- The front gate door panels open in opposite directions, one inwards, the other outwards. There is a "lay-by" opposite the house where we usually stop whilst the gate is being opened. Care must be taken going in and out of the gate, or crossing the road, as cars can drive surprisingly fast along the road
- Hot water is on and will be either on bottle gas boiler or a diesel boiler on a timer
- Windows can open two ways:
 - turn handle to 3 o'clock to open wide
 - turn to 12 o'clock (anti clockwise) to tilt
- To the right of each window is the cord to open the external blind, I would advise not to lift blinds all the way as they tend to get stuck!
- Windows can be kept open on a tilt all day to air and cool the house down
- You may wish to keep the blinds in the downstairs hallway and kitchen partially down in the afternoon in the summer as both areas will be in full sun
- There are two lamps on timers in the living room. Either leave them be, or put back on the timer when you leave
- Rubbish tips---the council rubbish bin is across the road from the house, and we recommend emptying the kitchen bin daily to avoid attracting any ants. Council collections tend to be daily
- You should have received the WIFI details via email

On the Day You Leave
--------------------

- Wash what you can in terms of towels and bed linen on the day you leave. Linen tends to dry in about one hour, otherwise just leave on the drying rack inside the house
- Anything you don't wash, just place in the downstairs wash-basket which is in one of the bedrooms
- Shut all the windows and drop the blinds
- Lock the Paellero
- Close and lock the conservatory windows, if open
- Set the alarm

Water & Toilets
---------------

The house water supply is untreated. This means it is fine for brushing of teeth, showering, and doing the dishes, but should not be used to drink straight from the tap. It should either be boiled first, or better still, use bottled water. You should find some provided in the kitchen.

There is no sewage with the toilets feeding into a cesspit. Therefore, could we request you go light on the toilet paper to avoid any nasty blockages, and that no "foreign objects" be placed in the toilet bowls. Each toilet has a bin, so use liberally.

House Alarm
===========

See welcome email for details on how to activate/deactivate.

Air-con
=======

Air-con is set to be cold in each room and set to 18C. Each room that has an AC unit will have its own a controller to activate it. Please don’t leave it on all day as electricity in Spain is surprisingly expensive. At night, you can press the sleep button so that the air-con switches off after x hours. Master bedroom is already set to 3 hours and I think the two downstairs bedrooms are too. Just press the sleep button when the machine is on and you’ll see. I would also advise switching it to quiet mode!

Conservatory
============

There are two sliding doors, note that only one side of door slides open as there is a metal bar stopper for the other pane. You can remove this if you wish. Once locked from the inside, no one can slide it open from the outside.

You can leave the sliding doors open to let the air in, but keep the mosquito net door to the house closed! Behind the blinds are windows with mosquito nets that can also be opened. To open windows you will need the patio key to unlock them first, after which you can push the slide lock down to unlock. Both window panels can then slide open.

Downstairs
==========

Living room
-----------

To switch on TV, hit the electric button on the extension cable below. Press power button on remote to switch on and then switch on the Sky box via the Sky remote. All channels are in English. (101 is BBC. If you want music, start from 101 and then press down program button on sky remote and you'll eventually get to the music channels.)

In the dining area, in the first drawer of the large dresser, you will find place mats that you can use.

First downstairs bedroom
------------------------

The twin beds have been made up. In the bottom drawer you will find two each of bath, hand, and beach towels. Air-con remote is on side table.

Second downstairs bedroom
-------------------------

The double bed is made up. Towels and bath mat are in the drawers.

Kitchen
-------

Surfaces may be a little dusty. All washing up stuff is on the side and there is a dishwasher, the tablets for which are in the cupboard to its right. Help yourselves to tea and Nespresso capsules.

You'll find bin liners, tea towels and a hand towel in the drawers.

There are also outside plates and bowls which are dishwasher friendly under the oven, and also plastic cups and plastic wine glasses.

You should find a large bottle of mineral water which we use for the kettle and Nespresso machine.

Downstairs hall
---------------

Window is a bit temperamental, so advise you open at a tilt (handle to 12 o'clock). You may want to keep the blinds down or half open to prevent the sun from heating up the area.

Bathroom
--------

The window opens on a tilt. There are places to hang towels next to shower or on the radiator behind door.

Upstairs
========

Before you go up the stairs, there are two light switches to the right, the first one is for the dining room, the other is to switch the hall light on upstairs.

There is a small window at the top of the stairs which we normally leave open on a tilt for the duration of our stay with the blind part way down. Next to the window is another light switch that controls an external side light over the car-port. Try not to switch it on and then forget about it!

Bathroom
--------

There are medical supplies---plasters, antiseptic cream, after bite, etc.---in the bottom drawer, should you need them.

Bedrooms
--------

The small bedroom has a double bed, but no air-con.

The master bedroom's bed is all made up. Our clothes are in the corner cupboard. Feel free to use the double wardrobe and the top two drawers in the chest of drawers. The keys to the terrace are on a plate on the side table.

There are also phone chargers and plug converters in the beside table drawer closest to the door.

Garden
======

Pool stuff---there are 2 loungers in conservatory including the pads for them and rest is in the Paellero. There is also a parasol for the outside table. The base is under the small round table outside the conservatory, which you can move wherever you need it. In the chest by the pool you'll find inflatables, a pump, and seat pads for the garden chairs. Remember that there may be biting insects flying around after sunset.

The cover for the gazebo is in the cardboard box in the conservatory, and curtains to go round the sides, though we don't tend to use these. Should you get strong winds, we'd advise taking down the covers as we haven't had time to fix the gazebo down properly and the wind will lift it straight off the ground.

Mind the smooth terracotta tiles as they are slippery when wet, or under wet feet.

Paellero
--------

This is locked and alarmed. We normally leave the door open during the day. You can keep it open by looping the string that is hanging on the wall round the door handle. Light switch is to the left of the paellero as you enter and is at shoulder height.

There is a fridge/freezer here where we tend to keep drinks for easy access, and some ice in the freezer section's top drawer. To the right of the fridge-freezer are the outdoor seats and another lounger.

Washing machine and dryer are out here to. With the washing machine I tend to use the mix option and the wash takes 1 hour. (Press "Inicio", once you’ve loaded it and shut the door.) If you use "Algodon", which is cotton, recommend you change the temp to 40C and select Turbo so that the wash time comes down to around 1 hour.

Outside toilet/shower
---------------------

There may be some cobwebs, but everything is functional! The shower is cold water only, though we still use it to rinse before getting in the pool.

Petanca
-------

You'll find some colourful balls to play *petanca* or *boules* in the pebbly area under the ivy. There are also some more heavy duty metal balls in the chest by the pool. Any of the plastic balls that are left outside to the elements will become brittle and crack.

Cactus Garden
-------------

The cactus area may be best avoided, as the spikes can be vicious, even though we have tried to trim most of the ones near the pathways.

Veg Patch
---------

Tiles are a bit slippery and loose, so be careful. There may well still be some red mites, so wouldn’t recommend the kids go down there. Recommend you pat yourself down after you go there to harvest any melon/tomatoes, as they tend to jump and attach themselves on you/your clothes. It can feel a bit unpleasant, but they are otherwise harmless to people.

Bugs and Other Garden Life
==========================

You should have no issues with mosquitoes in the house, so long as you keep the front door mosquito panel closed, as all windows in the main building are fitted with mosquito nets. We have seen them come out around dusk, so bear this in mind if dining in the garden *al fresco*.

We have found that wasps may sometimes nest around the garden. If you notice them in an out of the way place, best to leave them to it, avoiding that area. If in a more concurred space, there is wasp spray in the "paellero", which I recommend using at dusk, when they are less active.

Near the Villa
==============

There are two restaurants and a bar near the house:

- El Abuelo
- Masía Pavía
- El Albergue

Monserrat
=========

There are a number of bars and restaurants on of just off the main avenue, Avenida de Jaume 1. A place we like to go to is *L'Antic Mesó* by a little square, and diagonally opposite is a nice bakery/cafe.

Valencia
========

There are a couple of bars in the Mercat Central which are worth a shot.

Otherwise, a selection of eateries follows.

### La Pilareta - Calle del Moro Zeit

Mussels & other tapas
A bit pricey and nowadays a little touristy, but good to experience the
traditional throwing of the mussel shells on the floor when seated at the bar!

### Ca Mandó - Calle de Pedro III el Grande

Food from the local area, nicely done

### Taberna El Fino - Calle Pintor Salvador Abril

Nice tapas bar

Paella
======

If you want to eat a good paella, you won't be short of places to try the local
dish. Unfortunately, I can't recommend anywhere in the city, as I haven't tried
any. If you don't mind a taxi ride, here is a list of places you could try, from
closest to furthest from the city centre:

- **Alqueria del Pou**, _Entrada Rico_ --
 Sat in the middle of growing fields a stone's throw away from the aquarium
- **La Pepica**, beachside by the Marina
- **Arrocería Duna**, _El Saler_ --
 Beachside restaurant with an Ibiza feel
- Any restaurant in the small town of **El Palmar**, in the middle of _La Albufera
 nature reserve_ where the local rice is grown
